Discover Miyama – the hidden gem of Kyoto

About Kyoto Miyama

Just 90 minutes from the busy streets of central Kyoto, you will find a completely different world.

Welcome to Miyama, a peaceful countryside area surrounded by mountains, forests, clear rivers, and small traditional villages. The name “Miyama” means “beautiful mountains,” and once you arrive here, it is easy to understand why.

Located almost in the center of Kyoto Prefecture, Miyama covers about 340 square kilometers, but has a population of only around 3,100 people. About 96% of the area is covered by forests,
So, you can find small villages and farmland in the open spaces between the mountains.

There is no railway station in Miyama, and you will not find the busy streets, large shopping centers, or even convenience stores that you see everywhere in Kyoto City. Instead, you will find quiet country roads, traditional houses, rice fields, forests, and the clear waters of the Yura River.
This is why we like to call Miyama “the hidden gem of Kyoto.”

A Landscape That Reminds Japan of Its Past

Miyama is often described as a place where the “original landscape of Japan” still remains.

For many Japanese people, especially older generations, the scenery here brings back memories of the countryside they knew as children — small farming villages surrounded by mountains, forests and rivers, where people lived close to nature.

Much of this traditional countryside has disappeared from other parts of Japan as cities and towns have developed. In Miyama, however, the relationship between people and nature can still be seen in everyday life.

This traditional relationship is known as SATOYAMA.

There is no exact English translation for SATOYAMA. It describes a rural landscape where villages, farmland, forests and rivers exist together, and where people have used and cared for the natural environment for generations.

Thatched Houses, Forests and the Yura River

One of Miyama’s best-known sights is Kayabuki no Sato, a traditional village famous for its beautiful thatched-roof houses. Of the approximately 50 houses in the village, 39 have thatched roofs. The area has been designated by the Japanese government as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

But Miyama is much more than just its famous thatched village.

Deep in the mountains lies the Ashiu Forest, one of the most valuable natural forests in western Japan and the source area of the Yura River.

From the forests of Ashiu, the Yura River flows through Miyama and continues north toward the Sea of Japan. For generations, this river has supported farming, fishing, wildlife and everyday life in the villages along its banks.

Together, the mountains, forests, river, farmland and villages form one connected landscape.

Discover Miyama Slowly

Miyama is not a place to rush through.

Its beauty is found in the small things — the sound of the river, the smell of the forest, farmers working in their fields, an old thatched house beside the road, or a quiet village hidden between the mountains.

And one of the best ways to experience these things is by bicycle.

There are relatively few cars, and many of the country roads are quiet and surrounded by nature. Cycling allows you to travel slowly enough to notice the landscapes and everyday life that you might easily miss from a car or bus.

At PEACEFUL CYCLING TOUR, we believe that Miyama is not simply a place to visit.
It is a place to slow down, breathe the fresh air, meet the countryside, and experience another side of Kyoto.
