The Yura River — From the Forest to the Sea
The Yura River begins deep in the mountains around Ashiu Forest and flows through the heart of Miyama. From there, it continues north for about 146 kilometers before finally reaching the Sea of Japan.
For people in Miyama, the Yura River is much more than a beautiful river. For generations, its clean water has supported farming, fishing, wildlife and everyday life.
In the upper reaches around Miyama, the river is surrounded by mountains and forests. The water is cool and clear, creating an excellent environment for many kinds of fish and other wildlife.
A River Full of Life
The clean waters of the Yura River are home to fish such as ayu sweetfish, amago trout and Japanese char.
The river and its surrounding streams are also home to the Japanese giant salamander, one of the largest amphibians in the world and a Special Natural Monument of Japan.
Another interesting creature found around clean mountain streams is the kajika frog, famous in Japan for its beautiful voice. Its clear call sounds almost like a bird singing and can be heard along rivers during the warmer months.
These creatures are a good reminder of how important clean water and healthy forests are to the ecosystem of Miyama.
Ayu — A Taste of the River
The Yura River is especially famous for ayu, or sweetfish. During summer, you may see fishermen standing in the river catching ayu using a traditional Japanese fishing method called tomozuri, or “friend fishing.”
Ayu are very territorial. When another ayu enters their territory, they try to chase it away.
In tomozuri, a fisherman uses a live ayu as a decoy. When a wild ayu attacks the decoy fish, it is caught on a hook. It is a very unique fishing method and one of the traditional summer scenes of Japanese rivers.
Ayu are also interesting because their taste and aroma can be different from river to river.
Ayu mainly eat algae growing on rocks. The quality of the water, water temperature, minerals, river flow and the type of algae all influence their flavor.
The clean water and rich forest environment of the upper Yura River help create good conditions for ayu, making ayu fishing an important part of summer life in Miyama.
The River and the People of Miyama
For generations, the Yura River has also provided water for rice fields and agriculture.
Small waterways carry water from the river and mountain streams into the fields, connecting the forest, river, farmland and villages.
Farther downstream is Ohno Dam, which was built on the Yura River for flood control, power generation and water management.The river then continues north through Kyoto Prefecture until it finally reaches the Sea of Japan.
So when you look at the Yura River in Miyama, you are seeing much more than just a beautiful mountain river.
The water begins in the forests around Ashiu, supports fish, wildlife, rice fields and village life, and eventually continues all the way to the sea.

由良川 ― 森から里へ、そして海へ
由良川は、美山の山深くに広がる芦生の森周辺を源流域として流れ始めます。美山の中心を流れた後、京都府北部へと向かい、約146kmの旅を経て、最後は日本海へと注ぎます。
美山の人々にとって、由良川は単なる美しい川ではありません。その清らかな水は、昔から農業や漁業、人々の暮らし、そして多くの生き物を支えてきました。
美山が位置する上流部では、川の周囲に豊かな山と森が広がり、冷たく澄んだ水が流れています。
清流に暮らす生き物たち
由良川上流域には、鮎（アユ）、アマゴ、イワナなど、きれいな水を好む魚たちが生息しています。
また、由良川水系には世界最大級の両生類で、国の特別天然記念物に指定されているオオサンショウウオも生息しています。そして、山間の清流ではカジカガエルの美しい鳴き声を聞くこともできます。カジカガエルの声は一般的なカエルの鳴き声とは大きく異なり、小鳥のさえずりのような澄んだ美しい声で知られています。
こうした生き物たちの存在は、美山の豊かな森と清らかな水がつくる生態系を象徴しています。
美山の鮎と「友釣り」
由良川は、鮎釣りでもよく知られています。夏になると、川の中に立って鮎を釣る人々の姿を見ることができます。
代表的な釣り方が、日本独特の伝統的な釣法である**「友釣り」**です。鮎には強い縄張り意識があり、自分の縄張りに別の鮎が入ってくると、体当たりをして追い出そうとします。友釣りでは、その習性を利用して、生きた鮎を「おとり」として泳がせます。そして、そのおとり鮎を攻撃してきた野生の鮎を針に掛けて釣り上げます。日本の川ならではの、とてもユニークな釣り文化です。
鮎のもうひとつの面白い特徴は、育つ川によって味や香りが変わることです。鮎は主に川底の石についた藻類を食べて成長します。そのため、水質、水温、ミネラル、川の流れ、そして餌となる藻類の種類などの違いが、鮎の味や香りにも影響を与えます。
良質な鮎には、スイカやキュウリにも例えられる爽やかな香りがあり、日本では**「香魚（こうぎょ）」**とも呼ばれています。豊かな森と清らかな水に恵まれた由良川上流域は鮎の生育に適した環境であり、鮎釣りは今も美山の夏を代表する風景のひとつです。
美山の暮らしを支える川
由良川の水は、昔から美山の田畑を潤し、人々の暮らしを支えてきました。
山や川から引かれた水は小さな水路を通って田んぼへと流れ、森、川、農地、そして集落をひとつにつないでいます。さらに下流には、洪水調節や発電、水利用などの役割を持つ大野ダムがあります。そして由良川は京都府北部を流れ、やがて日本海へと到達します。
美山を流れる由良川を眺めるとき、そこを流れているのは単なる水ではありません。芦生の森に降った雨が川となり、魚や野生動物を育て、田畑を潤し、人々の暮らしを支え、最後には海へとつながっていきます。森から川へ、川から里へ、そして海へ。由良川は、美山の自然と人々の暮らしをつなぐ大切な存在です。
